The enhancement of the the Moldovan-American cooperation on the fight against smuggling of nuclear and radioactive materials was discussed in Chişinău
May 16th, Chişinău - At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of the Republic of Moldova, took place the bilateral consultations on the implementation of the Joint Action Plan for Combating Illicit Trafficking of Nuclear and Radiological Materials, during which such subjects as the enhancement of the Moldovan-American cooperation on combating the smuggling of nuclear and radioactive materials and the consolidation of national capacity to prepare and to respond to emergency and crisis situations were discussed.
 
During her opening statement, the Secretary of State, Tatiana Molcean, thanked the U.S. partners for supporting the national efforts in developing national capacities for combating illicit trafficking in of nuclear and radiological materials. As an example of results achieved in this area the elaboration of the National Strategy and of the Action Plan on the Non-Proliferation of Weapons of Mass Destruction and CBRN risk mitigation, were mentioned.
 
The head of the team and representative of the counter Smuggling Unit from the U.S. Department of State, stressed the importance of cooperation and exchange of experience between countries in strengthening international efforts to prevent and combat the risks associated with smuggling of nuclear materials.
 
Officials and experts present at the meeting underlined the importance of continuing the dialogue in order to increase the synchronization of common efforts, and thus to achieve better results in preventing and combating the proliferation of weapons of mass destruction, as well as of strengthening the  national capacities to prepare and respond to emergency and crisis situations. As cases of particular interest, the actions which have been undertaken in order to reinforce border security and radiological monitoring capabilities at border crossing points, and to increase d security in the "green" border area were also examined. Other topics discussed by participants included: the evolutions related to the revision of the national legislation on the illicit trafficking of nuclear and radioactive materials, the prosecution actions on such concrete cases and the development of forensic investigation capabilities in the case of nuclear offenses.
 
The Joint Action Plan between the Government of the United States of America and the Government of the Republic of Moldova on combating smuggling of nuclear and radioactive materials was signed in Chisinau on the 19th of July 2011.
