EU Foreign Ministers meet in Moldova

The ninth meeting of the European Action Group for Moldova at the level of EU member state’ foreign ministers took place in Chisinau today. Attending the event was also European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy Štefan Füle.

At the meeting’s opening, Deputy Prime Minister, Foreign and European Integration Minister Natalia Gherman thanked the European partners for the support provided for Moldova’s European integration both under political and operation aspect, by implementing various assistance programmes.

„The years to come, and especially 2015, will be decisive for the speed we will get closer to achieve Moldova’s European prospect, with the EU member states proving enough understanding, as well as encouragement for continuing Moldova’s European integration. Or, this is the logic of the Association Agreement and, respectively, the scheme by which we will further build our dialogue with EU. This is also the vision of a European, stable and prosperous Moldova, member of the great European family, our European partners share as well,” Gherman said.

The officials also approached the temporary implementation of the Moldova-EU Association Agreement starting from 1 September 2014, gradual integration into EU’s local market and identification of concrete support ways the EU, in general, and its member states, at bilateral level, may provide to Moldova in the context of restrictions imposed to the Moldovan products to access the Russian market.

For their part, the European officials reiterated the idea that Moldova “is not alone” on its European path and described this meeting as a proof of solidarity with Moldova in the regional context.

„EU supports Moldova’s European route and domestic reform process, which regards society’s modernisation, adjusting to the system of EU political, democratic, economic values and a better life for each citizen of this country,” co-chair of the meeting, Romanian Foreign Minister Titus Corlatean said.

In the same context, the co-chair of the meeting, French Secretary of State for European Affairs Harlem Désir specified that „the Association Agreement enters into force for the benefit of citizens, as its objective is to ensure stability and security in Moldova.”.

„We reconfirm the full support for Moldova’s European choice and are ready to work together, so that this process could be a true success for the citizens,” Italian Foreign Minister Federica Mogherini said.

„We have a common goal – to build an independent, prosperous and united Moldova, a strong partner for EU,” European Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Štefan Füle said.
