Discussions on the Transnistrian issue

Monday, 22 September 2008, Mr. Andrei Stratan, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of the Republic of Moldova met Mr. Victor Krijanovskii, Ukraine’s Special Representative for the transnistrian issue.

The two officials exchanged views on the recent evolutions in the transnistrian problem settlement process and discussed the perspectives to resume in the near future the negotiations in the “5+2” format, with the participation of mediators from OSCE, Ukraine and Russia, as well as of observers from EU and USA.

The Moldovan Foreign Minister informed the Ukraine’s Special Representative for the transnistrian issue on the initiatives launched by Chisinau authorities aimed to build trust between the two banks of Nistru. The Moldova’s strategy to solve the transnistrian issue on the basis of the “package approach” to all key problems tied to this conflict – political, economic, social and humanitarian, was also reconfirmed. The “package” proposals foresee the development and the adoption of a special legal status for the Transnistrian region, based on respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Republic of Moldova, according to the provisions of the Law from 22 July 2005 on the fundamental principles of the status of the Transnistrian region within the Republic of Moldova.

Also was highlighted the importance of the EU Border Assistance Mission to Moldova and Ukraine and the full realization of all its objectives. Recognizing the EUBAM’s role in ensuring an efficient cooperation between Moldova and Ukraine in securing the common border, it was emphasized the need to extend the mandate of the EU Mission after its expiration in 1 December 2009.
