On 8 November 2007, the Republic of Moldova was elected as a member of the United Nations Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) during the elections held in the UN General Assembly. Moldova has become a member of the ECOSOC, one of the most important UN bodies, for the first time since it had joined the UN in 1992. This election is a result of the efforts undertaken during the last three years by the Ministry for Foreign Affairs and European Integration, achieved with the involvement of all diplomatic missions and in particular, the Permanent Mission of the Republic of Moldova to the United Nations in New York.
During the following three years, starting 1 January 2008, the Republic of Moldova will bring its contribution to the consideration and settlement of the economic and social issues on the United Nations’ agenda. In cooperation with other Member States of the ECOSOC, Moldova will participate in debating the most important issues of the world economy and in strengthening the international economic cooperation; it will address the social, cultural, educational and health matters at the international level and will be involved in developing recommendations for the General Assembly, UN Member States and specialized agencies on the above issues. A special attention will be given to the consolidation of the international community’s efforts aimed at eradication of poverty, strengthening the international partnership for development and ensuring sustainable economic growth.
The Republic of Moldova will be actively involved in the ECOSOC reform process, in increasing the role of this body, tackling the most acute social and economic issues which concern the international community, developing the global dialogue of the Council with the other international bodies, enhancing cooperation with the Bretton Woods Institutions, the World Trade Organization and UNCTAD, coordinating the activities of various ECOSOC specialized subsidiary commissions and committees.
Note:
ECOSOC represents the major UN forum for debating international economic and social issues. ECOSOC consists of 54 UN Member States elected on the basis of geographical distribution. Its meetings take place in New York and Geneva.
