Andrei Stratan met Mr. Manfred Nowak and Mrs. Yakin Erturk, UN Special Reporters

Today, July 10, 2008, Mr. Andrei Stratan, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Foreign Affairs and European Integration of the Republic of Moldova, met Mr. Manfred Nowak, UN Special Reporter on Torture and other cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment or punishment, and Mrs. Yakin Erturk, UN Special Reporter on violence against women, its causes and consequences, during their evaluation mission to the Republic of Moldova from 4 to 11 July.

During the discussions Mr. Andrei Stratan presented the Republic of Moldova’s actual political and social situation, mentioning the achieved progresses in implementing our country’s democratic reforms. In was also underlined the constructive collaboration with the UN and its specialized committees and the substantial contribution of the experts recommendations and reports to the promotion of our country’s social reforms and to the alignment to the universal standards regarding human rights respect. Moldovan foreign minister also referred to the EU standards in this regard, mentioning that the Republic of Moldova has implemented them in the framework of its European integration policy.

The UN Special Reporters presented their impressions during the evaluation mission to the Republic of Moldova and appreciated the progresses which the Moldovan authorities have registered in promoting social policy, as well as in combating torture, inhuman treatments, violence against women and traffic in human beings. They also valued the attention which the Moldovan Government pays to the consolidation of the juridical framework, which is fully conformed to the international regulations in this matter. The UN Special Reporters welcomed the fact that the Republic of Moldova is the first country to ratify the European Convention on traffic in human beings and also for launching the appeal to the other countries to align to this initiative.

The situation in the transnistrian region was a particular subject discussed during the meeting and interlocutors expressed the common agreement on the urgent solution of the trasnistrian conflict exclusively by political means and with the valuable support of the international community, which would allow the constitutional authorities of the Republic of Moldova to promote social reforms in the region, to guarantee the protection and promotion of the human rights and to build up necessary premises for the authentic democratization of the country’s region from the left bank of the Nistru river.
